Mr Orban's meeting with foreign journalists

The Hungarian contribution to Iraq's stabilisation, the transition process of Fidesz Hungarian Civic Union and the state of the Hungarian economy were the points on the agenda at the press breakfast organised by the Hungarian International Press Association, where Mr Viktor Orbán was invited as guest speaker.

As far as Hungarian participation in Iraq is concerned, the text of last Thursday's UN Security Council resolution is clear in asking member states for participating in the stabilisation of the situation, Viktor Orban said. Consequently, we cannot see major obstacles with regard to Hungarian participation, details of which, particularly the type of the Hungarian contingent, must be agreed upon with the government, though, he said. Mr Orban pointed out that the Union's parliamentary group was about to debate the issue later that afternoon. He added: since the security council resolution mentions stabilisation instead of peacekeeping, Hungary is not likely to be sending fighting units to Iraq.

At the fall of communism we thought that grassroots civic movements actively participating in politics would emerge by themselves, he said. This was not the case, and the majority of Hungarians found themselves outside of the sphere of public life. This is the challenge the new Fidesz - Hungarian Union is trying to meet, answered Mr Orban to a question related to the party's transformation. Fidesz Hungarian Civic Union may not be defined as a traditional political party, its platforms provide an opportunity for different layers of the society to be involved in shaping the processes they are immediately affected by.

The Union was created in the right moment from this aspect, as we are facing a stormy year ahead of us, Mr Orban said, talking about the Hungarian economic outlook. In the last year, the government has not been governing, what we have experienced is a continuous attempt to slove problems and crises. If there is no governance, the solution of some issues are becoming more and more urgent, he added. He pointed out that the pension system, healthcare, education are all facing reforms, there are signs of crisis in the agriculture, and some of the entrepreneurs may find themselves in severe hardships after EU-accession without the government's assistance. In the absence decisions, style is what matters. When facing real problems and real issues, however, style becomes secondary, he emphasised. We are not plastic politicians striving exclusively for votes. For us, the content and integrity matters more than nice sentences, told the foreign journalists the new president of Fidesz Hungarian Civic Union.
