Since the fall of communism, the perception has been that public actors are being arranged on the map of politics following their interests. We are convinced that it is the set of values that really matters, and these values provide the fundaments of our newly created Union. We are convinced that that interests themselves stem from values, said Viktor Orbán in an interview given to the daily Magyar Nemzet on 24 May, evaluating the recent transformation of Fidesz into a broad-based Fidesz - Hungarian Civic Union.
The newly elected president of the Union also spoke of the first year of the socialist Medgyessy-government. If we remember last year's election campaign, the nation was confident. The debate was not about how to tackle with Hungary's economic crisis, as there was no such crisis, Mr Orbán said. Everyone recognised the good results of the centre-right government, and the opposition's message was that the development could even be faster if they came to power, he added. However, in just one year, we have come to the point when the current prime minister says that we must all economise with our resources, and the position of the current government is that the economic boom is still to be waited for, Mr Orbán said. What needs to be understood is that such booms do not happen by themselves, but they must be created, he warned, adding that projects must be launched in order to boost an upswing in the economy.
My generation is a fortunate one, answered Mr Orbán to a question related to his approaching fourtieth birthday. Just before forcing us to make the unaviodable compromises with socialism, the regime collapsed, and therefore we did not have to bargain with the past, he said. Instead, we had to make an agreement with the future, and we have already done a considerable part of that job. He pointed out: today, Hungary's condition is better, her opportunties are more promising than thirteen years ago. I am glad that this work coincided with the most active years of my life, Mr Orbán said. He added, a fourty-year old man is responsible for several children already, and this is also the age to realise that, however hard we work, we may provide only two things for our children in the end: roots and wings.
