The President of the European People's Party has read the Resolution on the status of civil liberties in Hungary, issued by the Executive Committee of the Christian Democrat and People's Parties International on 4 June 2003 in Lisbon, Portugal.
The European People's Party shares the concerns reflected by the aforementioned Resolution, and calls attention to its own Resolution, adopted by the 15th Congress of the EPP in Estoril on 18 October 2003, in which the EPP expressed its concern with the independence of the Hungarian media by condemning the actual situation, and called upon the Hungarian government to undertake efforts to ensure that an independent and balanced media be re-established. The European People's Party considers that its Estoril Resolution has not lost any significance since than.
Infringements on human and basic political rights are closely followed and seriously considered by international organisations which are based on the respect of these rights. Information on the situation of human and basic political rights is widely available in several languages, including on the Internet, and action by international organisations in this field do not necessarily require the involvement of the political forces concerned. The European People's Party, for instance, was well aware of the statement that was adopted by Fidesz - Hungarian Civic Union at its 17th Congress on 17 May 2003.
