Hungary needs a stable and calculable economic policy, the improvement of competitiveness and the reduction of public burden, and Fidesz is ready to help the government to frame such a program, said former finance minister Mihály Varga following an economic conference organised by the party last Wednesday. The conference was attended by leading business executives, among others: representatives of AMCHAM, the Confederation of Hungarian Employers and Industrialists (MGYOSZ), the Hungarian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MKIK), the Hungarian Banking Association, the Joint Venture Association, MATÁV, and the Hungarian Association of Craftmen's Corporations (IPOSZ).

Approaching EU-accession, the deteriorating international image of the Hungarian economy and the related necessary steps to be taken were the three reasons making Fidesz convoke leading Hungarian business executives for a discussion, said parliamentary group leader János Áder in his opening remarks. Mr Áder placed emphasis on enhancing competitiveness, with special regard to small and medium-sized enterprises, on measures needed to stimulate the inflow of foreign investment and on infrastructural development, particularly the National Development Plan, Hungary's framework of projects for receiving EU-funds. We would like to know what your comments and expectations are regarding these subjects, Mr Áder said. We would like to know what steps need to be taken in the 80 days until accession and in the months immediately afterwards, he added.

In their comments after the meeting, the executives stressed the need of improving competitiveness, criticised the government for trying to solve liquidity problems with short-term loans and for putting additional tax burden on the enterprises without prior studies on consequences. They also called the growing deficit of the current account a dangerous tendency. Addressing the issue of the National Development Plan (and the fact that health tourism was failed to be inserted in the scheme), one of the participants mentioned that it must be built on well-functioning projects instead of well-sounding stereotypes.
