Morally it is almost unacceptable that we are present somewhere not having a say in directing the course of events and not making decisions, but suffering the consequences of these decisions, said party president Orbán at a press briefing held on 11 May on the recent scandal surrounding the abuse of prisoners in Iraq. Fidesz initiated urgent four-party talks on the Hungarian role in Iraq and introduced a draft political declaration in Parliament on the issue.

We are facing a new situation regaring Iraq, since we have been witness to events that have triggered a moral distress in the whole civilised world, said Mr Orbán at the briefing. The tortures, abuses and humiliating procedures that Iraqi citizens had to undergo rightly evoked incomprehension all over the world and put additional question marks to the mission in Iraq, he added. Morally it is almost unacceptable that we are present somewhere not having a say in the course of events and not making decisions, but suffering the consequences of these decisions. We are also put a part of the shame on, and this is a morally paralysing state of affairs, he added. We must maintain our morally firm position on the global fight against terrorism. The problem is that Iraq is not any more about the struggle against terrorism but about something completely different, Mr Orbán said.

Fidesz considers that Iraq is a mission impossible in the present circumstances, and the way out of the current situation involves placing operations under UN command, instead an American one. Therefore, the party introduced a draft political declaration in Parliament on the issue, to be adopted at the four-party talks. The draft resolution condemns the inhuman acts as contrary to the aims and values of the stabilisation effort, and calls on the due punishment of those responsible. In addition, the draft resolution calls on the Hungarian government to make immediate efforts in order to promote a UN takeover of authority over civil and military operations in Iraq. If the conditions as to the UN takeover are not met until 30 June, the draft declaration continues, Parliament calls on the Hungarian government to initiate the withdrawal of the Hungarian contingent from Iraq.
