Today, we can state with certitude that Europe is our future, whereas we can also say with certitude that Hungary remains to be our homeland.

Today, Hungary and the Hungarian nation reached an important moment in history. With the signature of the Accession Treaty, Hungary has gained the status of active observer in the institutions of the European Union, which provides continuous presence, dialogue and a say for us. This situation presents new opportunities for the active and effective representation of our national interests.

Ever since its establishment, Fidesz - Hungarian Civic Party has taken a stand by Hungary's membership in the European Union. The party's European policy has always considered the interests of the Hungarian nation as a guiding principle. It was based on this conviction that the centre-right Orbán-government, building on the activity of its predecessors and especially on the politics introduced by the late prime minister Jozsef Antall, had taken Hungary to the threshold of the European Union.

Our accession to the European Union, a will of the people, means a new historical chance in raising the living standard of Hungarians, a chance in their enrichment in spiritual, cultural and economic terms and a chance in the reunification of the Hungarian nation overarching the borders. It is the task and obligation of the Hungarian State to care about the interests of the Hungarian communities inside and outside the European Union, to promote their existence and the national cohesion.

The year ahead of us is too long for celebration, but very short for preparation. It is the task of the government to make the best use of this period in launching and implementing projects by which all members of the Hungarian society can be made winners of accession. Fidesz will help by all means possible the preparation of the nation for the accession, and for successfully holding ground in the EU.

Hungarians must be winners!

The European Union is a community whose citizens have become subjects, creators and beneficiaries of this grand economic and political formation through decades by economic, political and other treaties and agreements. For us, our country's accession to the European Union means that we have come home to Europe. We have become a part of the grand community of the continent in political and economic terms, as well.

The European Union is not a static union of nations, but a permanently changing conglomerate of ever tightly cooperating states. The European Union is shaped by its citizens. Every citizen, every small community, every nation shapes its image, builds its core values, shapes its future. From now on, we are also doing this.

Our Europe is:

- a Europe of human scale, which is identified with by all citizens,

- a responsible Europe, where the competences of common institutions are clearly defined, precise and transparent,

- an effective Europe, where federal, inter-governmental, national and local levels of administration reinforce each other,

- a competitive Europe, which may face global challenges successfully,

- the Europe of common values, where the knowledge and experience of two millennia is condensed, shaping the future,

- the Europe of citizens, families and nations, where every human being and every community finds its place, enriches the common grand heritage and is enriched by the heritage of the others.

In the European Union, only a strong, self-conscious nation proud of its values and capable of exploiting its opportunities, a well-prepared Hungary may be successful. Preparation is a nationwide task, but a principally governmental responsibility.

Our goal and interest is that everyone become a winner of accession.

Europe is our future. A chance and promise.

Hungary is our homeland. And so remains forever.
